Rožnov Festivities 2025

The 43rd year of the International Folklore Festival

The Wallachian Open Air Museum and the town of Rožnov pod Radhoštěm would like to invite you to their 43rd International Folk Festival.

The Wallachian Open Air Museum will be celebrating 100 years of its existence in 2025. Its origins are connected with the great ethnographic festival The Wallachian Year which took place in Rožnov in July 1925, and the history of the museum dates back to this time.

The international folklore festival Rožnov Festivities is a direct continuation of the aforementioned First Wallachian Year and aims to be a worthy reminder of it. This centennial anniversary is to be a display of the colour and evolution of Wallachian folklore.

As part of the celebrations of its centenary, we would like to invite all the folklore ensembles and groups currently operating in Wallachia and provide them with a fitting space for the presentation of their activities. There are around forty such groups, and the gathering of an unprecedented number of two thousand performers in folk costume presenting the heritage of Wallachian folk culture at a single time and place is to be documented here.

  • The festival is to present unique heritage as performed by domestic and foreign folklore ensembles.
  • It is to feature a competition in the Wallachian Odzemek (an improvised male dance listed among the most important elements of the intangible cultural heritage of the Czech Republic).
  • It is to present the Romanian dance the Căluș which is part of the intangible cultural heritage listed by UNESCO.
  • It is inviting and supporting a Croatian expatriate folklore ensemble that is preserving its Wallachian heritage.
  • A hundred years later, the festival is to present a celebratory reprise of the theatrical performance The Rožnov Wallachian Wedding in its original version.
  • The special Stage 1925 is to revive the folklore heritage presented 100 years ago.

The festival is being held under the patronage of President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel, Minister of Culture of the Czech Republic Martin Baxa, Governor of the Zlín Region Radim Holiš, Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region Josef Bělica and Deputy Mayor of Rožnov pod Radhoštěm Tomáš Gross.
